Ocala, Fla. (March 21, 2014) – Ocala Utility Services is hosting the 2014 Florida Lineman Competition March 28-29.

More than 100 electric linemen and apprentices are expected to compete in this year’s event, which will be held at the Ocala Regional Sports Complex, 3500 SW 67th Ave.

The annual event is presented by the Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) to highlight safety and training techniques.  Teams and individuals from municipal utilities and electric cooperatives compete in a number of categories that linemen encounter on the job.  Categories range from changing insulators to rescuing an injured co-worker.

In addition to enjoying the friendly competition, utility teams develop teamwork strategies, share knowledge and techniques with other utilities, and develop valuable professional and agency relationships.

“The Lineman Competition is a rare opportunity to see what our electric linemen do on a daily basis,” says Michael Poucher, Ocala’s Director of the Electric Utility.  “Ocala is pleased to be hosting the event for the FMEA and we are looking forward to showing that Ocala is a great place to live, work and play.”

The competition, which will be from 8 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on March 29 (Saturday), is part of a two-day event.

The public is invited to attend this free activity.
