Winners Chosen in Business Plan Competition

Ocala, Florida (November 20, 2014) –The 1st Annual Marion County Youth Business Plan Competition concluded on Wednesday night following the final round of presentations by five teams of 14 students who presented ideas for new businesses in Marion County.

Initially, 11 teams of 29 students in 9-12th grades submitted applications to the contest. The first round of the competition focused only on the business plans submitted while the final round asked students to “pitch” their ideas in front of judges and a live audience.

The contest, a business creation initiative of the Ocala/Marion County Chamber & Economic Partnership and the Power Plant Business Incubator, aims to get students thinking and talking about opportunities to start companies of their own locally.

Teams placed in the following order:

1st Place: Flex Tech (Biomedical Device)
Members: Katelyn Alvies, Jordan Brown

2nd Place: Mosaics (Restaurant for Creatives)
Members: Christina Gamero, Kaitlin Gili

3rd Place: Zoom Into the Future (Entertainment Center for Families)
Members: Aaron Solomon, Rachel Thompsen, Brent Delawter

4th Place: Taco Rapido (Mexican Food Truck)
Members: Grant Harriss, Justin Petersen, Maarten DeHaan, Whitaker Redgate

5th Place: Swap-A-Style (Clothing Rental Service)
Members: Chase Petry, Xander Lenz, Alexander Silitch

The team selected for first prize, Flex Tech, will receive $1,000, a one-year Affiliate Membership at the Power Plant Business Incubator, one-year Entrepreneur Level Partnership with the CEP, their team’s story on the cover of two local magazines, and a trophy. Second and third prizes will receive $500 and $250 respectively, in addition to trophies.
